Don’t be misled by the sign on the outside which used to be a sweet shop dating back to ’20s. This small and intimate restaurant, is one of the favourite amongst locals. Special dish is the Maltese rabbit.

The Maltese islands are full of interesting places and attractions, museums and monuments which you can visit. Faced with such a choice, what are the best things to do and places to see, especially if you are on a short visit?

Here is our pick of the top 10 things to do in Malta.

1. Valletta is without doubt the best base for seeing the rest of the island. It is Malta’s Capital city and a World Heritage site. Located on a peninsula with magnificent harbours on either side. With the bus terminus just outside the City Gate it is easy to get around the whole of the island without waisting a lot of time.

2. The Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta is one of the largest and most opulent in Malta. This baroque palace built by the Knights of Malta with its beautiful architecture, internal courtyards, The Armoury, and its chambers lined with Gobelins Tapestries is a must visit sight.

3. Take a relaxing stroll in one of Valletta’s small gardens. The most romantic spot with the best views is definitely The Upper Barracca Gardens with a sweeping vista of the Grand Harbour and the three cities just across.

4. Cross over to the Three Cities (Birgu, Isla, Bormla) on one of the Maltese gondola boats from the Grand Harbour to Birgu. The gondola trip is enjoyable, as it give you one of the best views of the fortifications that surround the harbour.

5. Take a bus to Mdina. ‘The Silent City’ used to be Malta’s old capital. It stands on one of the highest points on the island and offers some incredible views of Malta. It dates back to the Arab rule and you can still get a sense its past through the narrow winding streets.

6.Visit the Museum of Archeology in Valletta where some of the best prehistoric artifacts are housed; then head out to the Hagar Qim temples on the southern edge of the island. This complex consist of three temples and date back to 3600 and 3200 BC.

7. St John’s co-Cathedral in Valletta is home to some of the finest religious artworks on the island. The most prominent is The Beheading of St. John, a Caravaggio masterpiece; his largest painting and is his only signed work of art.

8. Fancy trying some Maltese wine? Then take a trip to the Marsovin wine cellars, where you can sample some exquisite wines from the Maltese vineyards in the 400-year-old Cellars. Try the famous “Cassar De Malte” a quality sparkling wine produced in the Methode Traditionnelle!

9. A very popular attraction in Valletta is Casa Rocca Piccola in Republic street. Still owned by one of the oldest families in Malta, it is a true jewel and gives a peep into Maltese nobility. 1. Upper Barracca Gardens – The best view in the city overlooking the Grand Harbour and the three cities across. One of the most spectacular spots dating back to 1565. The grand balcony and arched walkway juts over the harbour at vertiginous hight, this breath breathtaking bit of craftsmanship incorporates part of the bastions which surround the whole of the city and has become an iconic image in Valletta. Adding to its charm is the small romantic mediterranean garden at its entrance.

2. Grand Master’s Palace – Built in 1571, it was one of the first buildings in Valletta. It served as the official residence for the Grand Master. It houses a Throne Room, an Armoury with one of the finest collections of weapons of the period of the Knights of Malta. A Tapestry chamber where you can still admire ten tapestries of the cycle ” Les Tentures des Indes” (The Indian Hangings), which were produced at the Royal Gobelin workshop of Louis XIV. in 1700.

3. Piazza Regina and the adjoining St. George square – On the grounds just in front of the Grand Master’s Palace and also at its side, is probably Malta’s most magnificent public urban space and piazza. The plaza sits lined with charming cafes, including the oldest coffee shop in Valletta – Cafe Cordina and its rival Cafe Premier, beautiful historic buildings and a swarm of pigeons. Meanwhile the neo classical Bibioteca overlooking Piazza Regina, still houses to this day one of the best collections of 16th century books dating back to the Knights of Malta. Walk inside and view the priceless collection of books which line the walls of the main hall.

4. Back streets – Although Valletta’s side streets is usually not part of many tourists’ itineraries, it certainly should be. Able your way through some of the narrow streets of this fascinating city lined with Maltese balconies, a typical feature of local architecture. A host of small restaurants beckon you in. The most popular with locals – Rubino for the national dish Rabbit stew. For a more romantic experience, the city is best explored at night when it quietens down and the dimly lit streets evoke a feeling of times gone by.

5. A Carriage Ride – So what if it seems like a tourist trap? A horse ride inside one of the Victoria carriages is an essential experience while in town. Although the city can be easily viewed on foot, a carriage through the streets gives you back the intimacy and grace of the past. A romantic ride remains the ideal way to end your vacation in Valletta.
