The Freedom Day Regatta, a cherished Maltese rowing tradition held in the Grand Harbour, commemorates the island's independence with fierce competition among local clubs. This year's event, completed yesterday on April 11 after a weather-induced suspension, showcased dramatic races and upsets.
Regatta History and Tradition
Malta's National Regatta dates back centuries, evolving from events organized during the Knights of Malta era tied to religious feasts. Today, it features bi-annual showdowns on Freedom Day (March 31) and Victory Day (September 8), with teams rowing fixed-seat boats over 1,040-meter courses in categories like Open, B, and Women's races. Clubs from Senglea, Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and others battle for shields, drawing thousands of spectators to the waterfront.
The regatta pits eight rowers per boat in races such as Tal-Midalji, Frejgatini, and Tal-Pass, accumulating points for overall standings. It's not just sport—it's a cultural spectacle blending athleticism, rivalry, and community pride.
2026 Event: Weather Challenges and Resumption
Strong winds and currents halted the regatta on March 31 after initial races, postponing the rest until ideal conditions yesterday. Competitors from Senglea, Cospicua, Birżebbuġa, Vittoriosa, and Marsamxett resumed with six crucial men's races. Crowds lined the Grand Harbour, cheering under sunny skies as drama unfolded on the water.
Dramatic Moments in Key Races
In B Category's Frejgatini race, Marsamxett crossed first but faced disqualification when a rower fell in early—until a successful protest reinstated their win. Senglea dominated Open Category races like Tal-Midalji and Tal-Pass, while Cospicua claimed Kajjiki and Women's Frejgatini. These twists kept spectators on edge till the final strokes.
2026 Winners and Standings
Senglea clinched the Open Category Shield—their 12th—with 64 points, edging Cospicua (48), Vittoriosa (30), and Birżebbuġa (28). Marsamxett won B Category at 42 points over Cospicua (36) and Senglea (32), with Cospicua taking the Women's Shield.
